Gastro Pubs in the City of York
As York is a major international tourist destination you will find that most pubs serve food at lunchtimes and in the evenings. Pubs usually serve food from 12pm-2pm and from around 6pm to 9pm.
The quality of the food will vary from hearty fare (Ploughmans's), pub grub (chips with everything, burgers etc), through to pubs that were created mainly for the purposes of serving food. In this section we will concentrate on those pubs that claim to be "Gastropubs" - an ugly phrase that is meant to illuminate those public houses with excellent almost restaurant-standard cuisine.
Visitors please note - all pubs in York are now non-smoking owing to government legislation. Consequently diners in York may now enjoy their meals in a smoke-free enviroment. Smokers who wish to indulge after the meal will find most pubs now provide an outdoor area where you may smoke. These areas are ususally covered to provide shelter from the Yorkshire weather, which can be a bit parky at times!
